Artist Statement
Navigation through existence is a process that challenges us all greatly. It seems we all meander through the insurmountable disarray of our surroundings, hoping to someday understand where we fit in with it all. Through my work, I attempt only to understand and be understood. I journey through my own past failures and triumphs, present joys and sorrows, and conject future opportunities, hoping to piece together work that acts as a mirror, willing to reflect something that feels honest and parallels the human experience. I am fascinated and driven by the horror that the conceptualization and projection of self will never end. I confront this problem with equal parts tenderness and rage.
Animals are common subjects of my work, and I often use them as vehicles for projection. I am drawn to their motivations and natural behaviors; their unguarded desires. They are authentic, vulnerable and honest. They have no other choice.
I mainly use printmaking as a means to create and come to these conclusions. This process feels particularly fitting because of the medium’s flexibility to print multiples. I feel this suits my work because I aim to reach broadly and hit something widely relatable.
